たくさんの鳥や動物の暮らす
緑溢れる森が、森林伐採になり、どんどん
木がなくなっていく様子を描きます。

どんどん自然破壊されるのですが、
なまけものが住む木が１本だけ残ります。
どうなるの？と思っていたら、地面から
たくさんの芽が。

そして森はまた緑がいっぱいに。

Alice Melvin

Alice Melvin is an illustrator and designer based in Edinburgh, Scotland. Her work is inspired by her love of paper, print and decorative arts. Animals, birds, pattern and text occur frequently in her work along with the odd teapot as well. Integral to a lot of her work is the making process and she loves working on products with an interactive element such as the ‘cut out and make’ cards and kits she has designed.

『レイナレイナ』

オランダの絵本作家ハリエット・ヴァン・レーク（Harriët van Reek）のデビュー作『レイナレイナ』（邦訳のタイトルは『レナレナ』）が、東京MXテレビで7月4日よりスタートしました。

イヴ・サンローランの絵本のアニメ化『おてんばルル』が放送されていた土曜23:22～23:30の枠。『レイナレイナ』は好奇心でいっぱいの少女・レイナレイナが人間の髪を食べたいネズミに逆立ちして食べさせてあげたり、ミミズの引っ越しを手伝ったり、雨のしずくでお茶を作ったり、奇妙なエピソードが満載のキュートな絵本で、1987年に金の石筆賞を受賞しています。アニメ化を手がけるのは、1984年生まれの若き女性アニメ作家・水尻自子さん。

1939年に描いたストックホルム、スルッセン駅近辺。現在と異なるのは路面電車が走っていないことくらい。

1939年に描いたストックホルム、テッシン公園。偶然にも右側のアパートに現在エクセル夫妻が住んでいる。

本の表紙にもなったストックホルムの王宮。67年経った今でもエクセル氏が描いた頃とほとんど変わっていない。

エクセル氏が描く鳥は、ファンタジーから生まれた個性的なキャラクラーばかり。もうひとつのお得意なモチーフはペン。

彼がマゼッティで手がけた作品のほとんどが詰まったサンタクロースの袋。マゼッティのクリスマスカードより。

This book has been all around the blog circuit already. I learned about it from Lena Corwin’s blog back in January and immediately ran over to Rare Device to pick up a copy. So if you haven’t seen it somewhere else at least now you won’t miss it because it’s that good. It’s all in Japanese and the rest is in Swedish so you can’t really learn a lot about him or the work, but who needs to when it’s all here is big pretty pictures. From book cover and interiors to package design to just plain illustrations, this guy did it all and did it well. Apparently Olle is one of the most respected Swedish graphic designers and his book Design=Ekonomi is used almost like a textbook at art schools. I have to say PIE books publishes some really great books. I wish their titles were more widely distributed in America.

先日，本屋で立ち読みをしていたら、ふと目に留まったアーチスト『Charlene Mullen』。テキスタイルを中心に多くの作品を発表している。刺繍のモチーフをここまでオリジナリティに溢れたデザインで表現できるとは，モノクロのシンプルな線がなんともいえない味わい深さを醸し出している。

About Charlene Mullen

Selling work to an international clientele - including Ralph Lauren and Donna Karan - has meant a variety of approaches have been required. From angular prints to craft embroideries, it is the process of 'making' that I love. This is achieved using techniques that are age old but interpreting them in a contemporary way. The aim is to create modern design within a historical context. Inspiration can, and does, come from anywhere - from Victorian Christening gowns to prison tattoos. Nothing is taboo.

In creating images that would be impossible to do by computer, the inherent imperfections bring an aesthetic element to the work. There is an intricacy that could only be achieved by the human hand, combining craftsmanship and beauty, function and utility. My latest work has been about securing structure with embroidery, so it is much more than merely decorative. A recent example is pleats secured with stitching and beadwork.

Once the creative decision is made, it can be executed by others. I prefer not to get involved in the complexities of mass production but focus on the next project. My work centres on collaboration and I like to work closely with clients seeing the idea through from conception to commercial outcome. The ultimate thrill is being given a brief and finding a perfectly surprising solution.
