Vera Neumann
「Vera Neumann」実は最近までこんな素敵なデザイナーがいたなんて、知りませんでした。たまたま本で紹介されていたパターンに一目惚れ。早速ネットて検索をしていたら、PearTreeMarketさんのサイトを見つけました。他では見られないパターンの豊富さに脱帽です。その中から私の琴線に触れたデザインの一部を紹介させていただきました。

1910〜1993
彼女は、1910年スタンフォードで生まれ。NYでアートとデザインを学び、第二次世界大戦後まもなくの1964年に夫のGeorge Neumannと『Printex』という会社を設立し、キャリアをスタートさせます。
最初の作品はランチョンマットでした。リネンにシルクスクリーンの技法で植物のモチーフをプリントとしたランチョンマットを作り、NYの有名デパート『Fifth Avenue』のバイヤー『B．Altman』に見せたところ、とても気に入られて一気にたくさんのオーダーが舞い込みました。
『Vera』というトレードマーク的なファーストネームのサインは1947年から使い始め、やがて作品はキッチンリネンやランチョンマットだけではなく、さまざまな作品に広がっていきました。代表的な作品、『スカーフ』は戦後たくさんあった「パラシュート・シルク」に目を付けた事から生まれました。この発想力や柔軟性はやはり持って生まれたセンスが大きいのかな・・と思わされますね。
やがて、『Vera』の作品はより広がりを見せ、ビジネスとして成功していきます。1950年代前半には、活躍の場所をManhattan（マンハッタン）から、Ossining（オッシニング）というマンハッタンから北へ１時間ほどの郊外へ移し、工房や工場を持つことになります。
ここでは人もたくさん雇い、チームで作品を生み出していくようになっていきます。年間500−600のデザインを生み出し、幾何学模様やお花，ドットプリント・・などの『Vera』の作品として思い浮かぶようなプリントがたくさん出てきました。
1960年代後半、夫のGeorge Neumann死後、彼女は会社を巨大アパレルメーカー『Manhattan Industries』へ売ってしまいますが、その後もその会社でデザイナーとしての仕事を続けていたようです。
そして1993年（享年84歳）彼女は亡くなりましたが、彼女の死後も商標権を所有しているアトランタの会社が『Vera』の作品として製品化され続けられました。

A repeated red zig-zag line, usually found within word processing programs to denote a word that is not in the manufactures or the users dictionary. The Line underscores here the word Mitim in repetition but has seemingly vanished. Mitim is a fictional word newly invented by Ryan Gander. Deriving from a compound Neopheutos-mythoetymon the word points to the meaning - a newly invented word with a mythical etymology, a self-descriptive word, idea or object that refers back to the legacy of its own construction.
